Clare Capuchin Sisters

St. Clare

Clara is born is Assisi in a noble family in 1193. In the spring of 1211, moved the Holy Spirit and illuminated by Francis’s preaching, she left everything behind to follow Jesus. On Palm Sunday, with the cover of night, Clara left her paternal home and went to St. Mary of Porziuncula, where Francis received her and consecrated her to the Lord. Not long after she established herself in the St. Damian convent, restored by Francis.

Clare was a woman of her time, her demeanor, human and spiritual formation, sensibility, as well as her biography confirm her as such. She represents in her century one of the worthier, if not the worthiest model of a brave and coherent, creative and not easily woman. The central axis of the Clare spirituality is the following of poor and humble Jesus Christ, so much that she obtained from Pope Gregory IX, the so called “Privilege of Poverty.

Clara was the first woman that saw close to her death, the Rule written by her for her Order of Poor Ladies, recognized by the Pope Innocent IV, in 1253. Radiant with light, Clare dies on August 11, 1253 muttering this prayer: “Thank you for creating me”. Alexander IV canonized her on August 15, 1255.

Charisma

The Clare Capuchin Sisters constitute a reform of the St. Clare ideal just like the Franciscan reform of the Minor Capuchin Brothers. The beginnings of the order go back to the foundation in Naples of a hospital built by María Lorenza Longo, served by a community of Franciscan Tertiaries. With the arrival of the Capuchin Brothers to Naples in 1529, María Lorenza got interested in the new Capuchin reform. In 1533, the hospital was left under the direction of St Cajetan de Thiene, who in 1535, obtained the canonical approval from Rome under the title of Franciscan Sisters of the Third Order, emphasizing a contemplative character and adopting a life of cloister.

In 1538, St. Cajetan entrusts their spiritual attention to the Capuchins whose influence became more intense. On the 10th of December of that same year, Paulo III confirmed the definite mode of the foundation, placing it under the St. Clare Rule and the spiritual guidance of the Capuchins.

María Lorenza died in 1542. By then, the Naples Monastery had acquired a fame of sainthood. The new reform soon spread. It was founded in Perusa in 1553, in Gubbio in 1561, arriving to Rome in 1575. In Milan, St Charles Borromeo founded three more monasteries. The first monastery in Spain was built in 1588 in Granada by Lucía de Ureña. The first foundation in the America was in Mexico in 1665. In 2005 the order had 160 monasteries and 2209 nuns.

Vocation

The vocation to the Capuchin Clare life is a specific calling to Life from God, to follow poor, humble and crucified Jesus Christ, to be happy, and to give that happiness to those around us, according to the style by Clare of Assisi.

The Calling to the Clare Capuchin life is to live, to follow, to be happy and to give to God in the style of St. Clare of Assisi: with burning love, with a free spirit, with bursting trust in his care and providence, with a joyful heart and with open arms.

Following Jesus Christ in the St. Clare of Assisi style is to live in a perennial and profound encounter, from the solitude and intimacy of prayer, with heart and hands bare by following of poor Jesus; with intense interior joy, manifested in brotherly coexistence.

Presence in Mexico

The Capuchin sisters are present far and wide in the country, and few are the states that don’t have at least one monastery. They total 72, plus a Studies Institute in the State of Mexico.

To this, we must add that the Capuchin Sisters of Mexico have founded monasteries in the United States (3, Philippines (3), Ecuador (1), Costa Rica (1), Argentina (1), Santo Domingo (1), and have sent sisters to help other monasteries in Spain (12), Italy (1), Bolivia (2), and South Africa (1).
