This year we are overjoyed to celebrate together 75 years of uninterrupted presence in Mexico. We remember that year of 1947 when we began this presence of which we are a part today. We do not forget that before other Capuchins set foot on Mexican soil.
In 1761 the first Capuchin who set foot on Mexican soil was Fr. Hilarione de Bergamo as a beggar for the Congregation of Propaganda Fide to fund the Capuchin mission in Tibet. It is until 1907-1911 when the brothers arrive to cement the Order from Catalonia. The revolutionary movements of 1911 progressively made life very difficult for the brothers, and they had to leave the country in 1918. Then there was a new presence of the brothers, dating from 1921-1926, in Mexico City. His activity in “Nuestra Señora del Pocito”, a subsidiary temple to the Shrine of Guadalupe, is marked by the pastoral care of the parish, chaplains and preaching. The rise to power in 1926, of President Plutarco Elías Calles. forces the brothers again to leave Mexico. And it is in 1947 when the Capuchins again make history in Mexico. A time where our purpose has been to live the Gospel in the company of the poorest. We celebrate these 75 years with infinite gratitude to Father Good for all the blessings our Order has received in these lands and we are also aware that our work still continues. We celebrate these 75 years with you and we welcome your prayer to continue living the vocation we have received in fidelity.
The Lord bless you and keep you. Your Younger Capuchin Brothers of Mexico and Texas
